Karl Lagerfeld mastered wearable elegance for Chanel haute couture. Galliano bridged fantasy and glamour for Dior. Christian Lacroix eschews any notion of functionality, reality and comfort and I adore him for it. His vision of haute couture is so unique and unmistakable that I could not imagine the Paris shows without him. He brings a perspective that is often brushed aside in today’s cut-throat marketplace - that of one not concerned with sales or giving birth to the next “big thing.”
Opulence is the name of the game for his Fall Couture collection. It’s like a trip through Versailles circa 1700 with Russian military and punk sensibility. Each season it seems unlikely that someone with such grand, but still masterfully cohesive visions could top themselves, but Mr. Lacroix once again shows why he is always one of the hottest tickets in Paris.

Chanel Haute Couture - an ode to Anna?  More pictures to come.  I’ve only seen a few shots thus far, but you can tell he was mighty happy with La Wintour rocking his design at the Met Costume Ball.  It seems all of the models are sporting her signature coif.

Yet Another Reason To Hate Fox News

Talk about despicable. I refuse to link it, but Fox News aired video footage of Russian model Ruslana Korshunova after her suicide. Her uncovered, bloodied face. Fox News send out a producer to apologize for scum-bag and worthless excuse for a “journalist” Geraldo Rivera showing the video, but I, for one, am not appeased.

Va-va-va-voom! Another stunner from Galliano’s Dior couture show.  It’s, not surprisingly, earning raves.  Suzy Menkes, Hadley Freeman, Hillary Alexander all fawned over the retro-glam looks.  Suzy even goes so far as to credit Galliano (and muse Carla Bruni) with “saving” couture and giving it the “kiss of life.”  I cannot disagree.  Galliano is the only couturier working that can bridge the worlds of fantasy and real world glamour.  He takes you to the edge, but is wise enough to edit and keep you hanging.  Please, give your eyes and sartorial-side  a treat and view the entire show.  To call this man a designer is a disservice - he is truly an artist.

If you rock a really great outfit, and no one is around to see it, can it be repeated shortly thereafter?

First images of the Galliano Dior haute couture show are trickling in! Love the flapper influence, love the sheer. This man is a genius. Thank goodness we still have designers out there doing fashion as art.

Lagerfeld, wearing what looked like a Dior Homme outfit from the Slimane era, gave what appeared to be a smile.

Oh hellz no, Marc Jacobs has offended the gays. The lastest in his line of limited edition tees, the Jon Lynn designed confederate flag rainbow shirt has quite a few members of the gay community up in arms. Personally, I’m not sure what Marc and Jon are trying to get across, other than to ruffle some feathers. As a Southern, I’m not very amused. Not seriously offended either. Mainly just confused.

hydeordie:

I love Marfa Prada. It’s a completely faux store outside of Marfa, TX in the middle of nowhere. It doesn’t open, you can’t go in and you can’t buy anything.

Now you have a reason to visit Texas!

My head hurts

Oh brother.  Vogue needs to get over itself.  I know Anna and Andre are just falling all over themselves to charm the Obamas, but seriously, did you they have to take another slap at Hillary for turning down an interview and shoot?  Today’s WWD has a story on the writer assigned the Hillary piece, Julia Reed.  First she knocks Howard Wolfson, calling him the “most charmless human being on the planet.”  Bitch, please.  His job has nothing to do with charm.  He’s a communications director.  His job is to manage the press.  Last time I checked, they don’t all love Hillary.  Excuse him for eschewing bullshit pleasantries and getting down the job.  The story goes on to discuss the downfall of the project.

Reed months later was informed the deal was off. She said she was told, “We already have the women’s vote in the bag,” and that Wolfson said, ‘“We thought we were going to be in a bigger dogfight. We don’t need you anymore.’ This was right before Iowa. What an idiot!”

Oh yeah, because Iowans LOVE Vogue. I’m sure Hillary lost thousands of votes when angry fashionistas from Waterloo bound together at the caucuses (do not even get me started on how bullshit those are) to punish Hillary for turning down la Wintour.  MAYBE she lost Iowa because she didn’t connect with voters there!  Or because her field and GOTV plans were terrible! And, even though Edwards edged her out in the Iowa vote totals, she beat him when it came to women by 7%!  Nope, it was because she didn’t appear in Vogue. Totally logical.

The 60s are officially back.  From Chanel’s Cruise line, inspired by Brian Jones (the late, founding member of the Rolling Stones) to Gucci’s S/S ‘09 men’s collection - paisley, vertical stripes and tie-dye is popping up everywhere.  The timing is perfect.  We’re officially into the dog days of summer.  Long skinny pants with fitted print tees for men, boho maxi dresses for the girls.  Androdgyny is also back on the table - many of the Chanel Cruise looks were heavily menswear-inspired.  I could picture David Bowie rocking many of the looks.

On the flip side, Marc Jacobs and Prada are both showing male models sporting dresses - the former in his new Teller-photographed Marc by Marc ad campaign and Prada during their S/S ‘09 show.  Not that this is the first time Miuccia has styled her boys in very feminine attire.  I consider myself quite opened minded when it comes to fashion and style, but when comes to dresses and skirts, I’d perfer they stay on the gals.
